Travel to Gibraltar

ECYC - Travel Information Guide - Valid as at 7 August 2025 - author: Reg Morris.

⛵Marinas in the Gibraltar Area

ECYC committee was negotiating the best possible rate for berthing the club yacht and the selected marina was Alcaidesa Marina in La Línea De La Concepción (about 20 minutes walk from the airport across the Spanish border). Details of Alcaidesa Marina are here.

✈️By Air

Gibraltar has an airport; its terminal is 15 to 20 minutes walking from the marinas.  British Airways (from London Heathrow)) and EasyJet (from Gatwick, Manchester,  Birmingham and Bristol) operate direct scheduled flights. Flights are not available every day of the week.

A word of warning: Gibraltar’s runway is susceptible to weather and diversions to  Málaga airport (130km distant) happen regularly. This requires rebooking a flight from  Málaga and travelling there, or waiting several days for a flight out of Gibraltar. Flights cancelled after the last bus could require a night in a hotel or an expensive taxi fare. Travel insurance to cover disruption due to weather is advised since airlines do not offer compensation for this.

Some people might prefer to fly to Málaga. It is served by many more airlines and has  direct scheduled flights from many more locations in Britain. Arrival should be timed to  coincide with the daytime bus service (approximately from 0700 to 2000) between  Málaga and Gibraltar to avoid an overnight stay.

Travel Between Gibraltar and Malaga

Taxi

At Gibraltar there is a taxi rank just past passport control on the Spanish side of the  border. When you get to the road about 50m after customs, look right and the taxis are  in the shelter behind a wall with a big, illuminated advertising sign. Taxis to the centre of  Málaga are €180 and are a bit cheaper to the airport.

By Bus -Gibraltar

Buses between Gibraltar and Málaga City and Airport run from around 0700 to 2000 and  times can be found, and bookings made, at http://www.omio.com. Or you can  download the Omio App which also includes other types of transport. The bus journey takes between 1 and a half and 3 and a half hours since some buses are more direct. Check your bus stops at the airport if that is where you are going.

The bus station for Gibraltar is across the border in La Línea de la Concepción in the  Plaza de Europa. It’s about 10 minutes’ walk after border control. Go straight ahead and across the zebra crossings and keep left of a line of shops and restaurants. You will need to turn left after about 200m to find the bus station. This is best done using a map on your phone.

The La Línea bus station is being rebuilt, and tickets are currently available for purchase from a portacabin ticket office and cost €18.60 to go to the centre of Málaga.

🚌 By Bus – Málaga Airport and Málaga Centre

The central bus station in Málaga is right next to the María Zambrano train station from where there are trains during the daytime to the airport, and everywhere in Spain (see  below).

Buses from Málaga airport run to Gibraltar and to Málaga from the bus-stop in the  arrivals area of the main terminal. They also run from the central bus-station in Málaga to Gibraltar.

There is also a 10-minute train service from the airport (Terminal 3) to Málaga’s María Zambrano train station.

🚂 Trains – Gibraltar

There is a train station about 20 minutes taxi ride from Gibraltar at San Roque-La Linear. Trains are infrequent and run only around four times a day.

There are no direct trains to Málaga, and the indirect route would require at least one change and take several hours.

There are no buses to the train station and the nearest bus-stop is about 1.5km from it.  A taxi from the taxi rank just over the border to the train station costs €25 but once at the station train fares are very cheap. Alternatively, you can take a bus from La Linea bus station to Algeciras (around €5) and catch the train from there.

The line runs from Algeciras to the west up through Ronda to the north to join the main rail network at Bobadilla. This line may not be of use to many but is dramatically  picturesque!

Train times can be found, and tickets booked in sterling currency, at www.trainline.co.uk

🚆Trains – Málaga

Málaga’s main María Zambrano train station has links to Málaga Airport, the main  Spanish network, the bus station, and the Málaga metro.

A short branch line from a separate platform at one end of the station (C1), runs west along the coast to Fuengirola and stops at the airport in three stops after 10 minutes.  Trains run from 05.20 hours to 23.30 hours.

Tickets on this line cannot be booked in advance, or online, but must be bought on the day in machines or at the ticket office beside the C1 line.

Happy travelling!
